Question 1

A car is moving at a speed of 90 kmph. What is the speed in m/s?

 A

25 m/s.

 B

26 m/s.

 C

24 m/s.

 D

27 m/s.

Soln.
Ans: a

We know 1kmph = $5/18$ m/s. So 90kmph = $5/18 × 90$ = 25 m/s.

Question 2

Bus X travels 50% faster than bus Y. They start together and meet at the same time after travelling a distance of 24km. What is the speed of the bus X, if the bus Y wasted 2 hours during its journey?

 A

4 kmph.

 B

5 kmph.

 C

3 kmph.

 D

6 kmph.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let the speed of bus X be x, and of Y be 3x/2. The difference in the times taken by them is $24/x - 24/({3x}/2)$ = 2, which becomes 24 × $1/{3x}$ = 2. Solving, we get x = 4 km/h.

Question 3

A city bus has an average speed of 20 km/h if it doesn't stop anywhere. But if it stops in-between the average speed drops to 15 km/h. How many minutes does it stop in 1 hour?

 A

15 mins.

 B

16 mins.

 C

14 mins.

 D

6 mins.

Soln.
Ans: a

Due to stoppages, it covers a less distance of 20 - 15 = 5 in one hour. The time taken for that distance would be the wastage due to stopping = $5/20$ × 60 = 15 mins.

Question 4

A school bus covers a certain distance in 4 hours at a speed of 56 km/h. At what speed should it travel to cover the same distance in 7 hours?

 A

32 kmph.

 B

33 kmph.

 C

31 kmph.

 D

34 kmph.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let t1, v1 and t2, v2 be the speeds and times for covering the same distance. We have t1 × v1 = t2 × v2. From here we get v2 = ${4 × 56}/7$ = 32km/h.

Question 5

Two trains start simultaneously. The first train moves from Jallandhar to Amritsar, whereas the second train moves from Amritsar to Jallandhar. After they meet at a point in between, they respectively take 100 hours and 36 hours to reach their destinations. What is the ratio of their speeds?

 A

${3/5}$.

 B

2.

 C

${13/7}$.

 D

${18/7}$.

Soln.
Ans: a

If they take $t_1 and t_2$ hours respectively to reach their destinations, then the ratio of their speeds is $√t_2 : √t_1$. So we get $√36 : √100$, which gives 6 : 10, or ${3/5}$.
