Question 1

A, B and C hire a coffee vending machine. A uses it for 5 hours and prepares 8 cups, B uses it for 17 hours and prepares 4 cups and C uses it for 19 hours and prepares 3 cups. If the total rent is Rs. 990, how much should A pay?

 A

Rs. 240.

 B

Rs. 250.

 C

Rs. 230.

 D

Rs. 260.

Soln.
Ans: a

Sum of the cup-hours is 8 × 5 + 17 × 4 + 19 × 3 = 165. Share of A = ${8 × 5}/165$ × 990 = Rs. 240.

Question 2

X and Y invest in a business in the ratio 5 : 19. If X earns Rs. 1000, what is the profit?

 A

Rs. 4800.

 B

Rs. 4801.

 C

Rs. 4799.

 D

Rs. 4802.

Soln.
Ans: a

If X earns 5, the profit is 5 + 19. Then, if the earning is 1000, profit = ${5 + 19}/5$ × 1000 = Rs. 4800.

Question 3

Mr. X and Mr. Y start a venture with investments in the ratio 4 : 17. After 3 months, X withdraws $1/4$th of his capital, and Y withdraws $1/17$th of his capital. If the profit at the end of 10 months is 1176, then what is the share of X?

 A

Rs. 198.

 B

Rs. 298.

 C

Rs. 98.

 D

Rs. 398.

Soln.
Ans: a

After 3 months, the ratio of their capitals is 3:16. The ratio of money-months of X and Y is ${4 × 3 + 3 × 7}/{17 × 3 + 16 × 7}$, which is $33/163$. Profit of X = $33/{33 + 163}$ × 1176 = Rs. 198.

Question 4

A, B and C start a partnership business by investing in the ratio 2:3:7. It was agreed that (1/3)rd of the profit would be divided equally, and the remaining proportionately. What is B's share in a profit of Rs. 10800?

 A

Rs. 3000.

 B

Rs. 3100.

 C

Rs. 2900.

 D

Rs. 3200.

Soln.
Ans: a

Profit to be proportioned is $(2 × 10800)/3$ = 7200. B's share in this is $(3 × 7200)/(2 + 3 + 7)$ = Rs. 1800. To this add 1/9 of the profit = 10800/9 = 1200. The total share = Rs. 3000.

Question 5

A, B and C start a partnership business by investing equal amounts of money. What would be the share of B if the annual profit is Rs. 4800, and the time for which they invested are in an AP?

 A

Rs. 1600.

 B

Rs. 1700.

 C

Rs. 1500.

 D

Rs. 1800.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let the times be a - d, a and a + d. The amounts are same but times are different. So the share should be in the ratio of times. Share of B = $(time of B)/(sum of times)$ × 4800 = $a/{3a}$ × 4800 = Rs. 1600.
