Question 1
Mr. X has got a new telephone connection for a plan that has a 30-day rental of Rs. 900. The phone was installed on June 21. What is the amount of the bill for the month of June if billing is done on pro-rata proportionate basis?
Question 2
A bag contains 25p, 10p and 5p coins in the ratio 8 : 4 : 11. How many 25 paise coins are there if the total amount is Rs. 59?
160.
162.
158.
164.
Ans: a
Let the total number of coins be 8x, 4x and 11x. Please note that 25p = Rs. 1/4, 10p = Rs. 1/10, 5p = Rs. 1/20, so they add to x × $(8/4 + 4/10 + 11/20)$ = 59. LCM of 4, 10 and 20 is 20, multiplying both sides by 20 we have x × $(8 × 5 + 4 × 2 + 11)$ = 59 × 20, which is x × $(40 + 8 + 11)$ = 59 × 20, solving for x we get x = 20, so 25p coins = 20 × 8 = 160.
Question 3
What is the ratio A : B : C if A = $7/9$B and B = $18/17$C?
14 : 18 : 17.
7 : 18 : 17.
9 : 18 : 17.
7 : 17 : 126.
Ans: a
We can write B = $9/7$A. Now we can use B as the pivot and write $9/7$A = B = $18/17$C. Divide all three with 9 × 18 to get $A/{7 × 18}$ = $B/{9 × 18}$ = $C/{17 × 9}$. So the required ratio is 126 : 162 : 153. The answer is 14 : 18 : 17.
Question 4
What is x, if 56 : x :: 14 : 13?
Question 5
