Question

Seven friends A, B, C, D, E, F and G are sitting in a straight line, and facing north. F is third to the right of A. D is an immediate neighbor of B, who is not at an extreme end. There is one person between A and C. G is at an extreme end, but C is not at any extreme end. There is one person between D and C. What is the sitting arrangement?

Solution

This is the first pass:

  1. A _ _ F
  2. BD or DB
  3. A _ C or C _ A
  4. A_C_D or D_C_A

The second pass:

  1. Since "G is at an extreme, C is not any extreme", so C _ A is not possible, because that would make C _ A _ _ FG. Hence we revise the arrangement to A _ C F.
  2. Since there is one person between C and D, we can revise the arrangement to A _ C F D.
  3. B can now be only to the right side of D, so we have A _ C F D B.
  4. B is not at an extreme, so if G has to be at an end. then it will have to be to the right side of B. The arrangement becomes: A _ C F D B G, and putting E into this we get the answer as: A E C F D B G.
