Question 1

In a group of dogs and hens the number of legs is more than 2 times the number of heads by 22. What is the number of dogs?

 A

11.

 B

13.

 C

9.

 D

15.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let x be the number of dogs, and y the number of hens. Total number of legs = 4x + 2y. The total number of heads is x + y. So 4x + 2y = 2(x + y) + 22. Cancelling 2y, and solving for x, we get x = 11.

Question 2

In a group of dogs and hens the number of legs is more than 2 times the number of heads by 10. What is the number of dogs?

 A

5.

 B

7.

 C

3.

 D

9.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let x be the number of dogs, and y the number of hens. Total number of legs = 4x + 2y. The total number of heads is x + y. So 4x + 2y = 2(x + y) + 10. Cancelling 2y, and solving for x, we get x = 5.

Question 3

Out of a collection of only blue and pink marbles, 2 pink marbles are removed away. After that there are 2 blue marbles for every pink marble. Next, 18 blue marbles are removed away. As a result, there are 5 pink marbles for every blue marble. How many blue marbles are there at present?

 A

2 marbles.

 B

4 marbles.

 C

8 marbles.

 D

6 marbles.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let the number of blue marbles at present be x. The number of pink marbles at present are 5x. If we put back 18 blue marbles, the equation becomes x + 18 = 2 × 5x, which gives 9x = 18, or x = 2 marbles. Note: some information in the question is never used, it is given for confusing the candidate.

Question 4

A piece of length $12{2/27}$ is cut out of a pipe of length $27{1/6}$. What is the length of the remaining pipe?

 A

$15{5/54}$.

 B

$16{21/53}$.

 C

$13{33/56}$.

 D

$17{25/56}$.

Soln.
Ans: a

We have to find $27{1/6}$ - $12{2/27}$, which is same as ${163/6}$ - ${326/27}$ = 163 × ${27 - 6}/{27 × 6}$ = ${815/54}$. So ${815/54}$, which is same as: $15{5/54}$ is the required answer.

Question 5

Mr. X and Mr. Y have certain number of marbles with them. If Mr. X gives 7 marbles to Mr. Y, they will have the same number of marbles. But, if Mr. Y gives 2 marbles to Mr. X, then Mr. X will have twice as many marbles as are left with Mr. Y. How many marbles does Y have?

 A

20.

 B

22.

 C

18.

 D

24.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let them have X and Y marbles, respectively. We have X - 7 = Y + 7, which gives X - Y = 14. By the second condition, X + 2 = 2(Y - 2), which can be re-arranged to X - 2Y = -6. Solving for Y, we get Y = 20.
