For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

I'm M22 so I have around 6 months left. I was basically forced to choose AI SL, but I know it doesn't have much future. I don't know if they'll allow me to change, but if I can should I? Pros: It will basically make my IB diploma useful. I'm very good at Maths. I'm scoring almost 10/10 in all the practice tests I do (although I understand AA SL may be much harder than that). I hear there's not as much difference between AI SL and AA SL as between AI SL and AI HL. The criteria for the IA are the same so I won't have to change that. Cons: I have little time left. I'll have to do it on my own. I will keep going to AI SL clas…

Hi guys I am currently in grade 10 preib and I was thinking about what subjects I want to take for next year when I am officially in the Ib program. I am pretty horrible at math so I was thinking about what I can do over the summer to be prepared when I enter sl math in grade 11. Is there a book I can order? A math course I can take? Same thing for French but I am fine at French I just want to make sure that I am prepared when I go in next year.

Hello everyone, I am investigating to what extent perceived facial attraction is quantifiable using the golden ratiomore specifically how attractive a face is considered depending on how closely it conforms to 'Marquardt's Phi mask'. The survey is very fast, easy to answer and above all entertaining (I have spent many hours laughing whilst editing these photos!). Here is the link: https://www.surveylegend.com/s/3q7k Thank you!

so my question is " how does club head speed affect the distance of a golf ball" im just worried that this is too simple, im doing it on correlation as i find that the easiest (if you have any other topic suggestions please tell me) however i was thinking about changing it to "how does club head speed affect spin and distance of a golf ball" is this better and if so how do i do a correlation with three variables. Thank you!!

hey guys, I basically chose golden ratio in art (i know very basic) but I'm seriously not the best in Math and I just chose this because why not, i didn't expect this to be so overused. My IA is due very soon and I'm basically making my own art using the golden ratio for personal engagement as well. this is basically my investigation: I will pick samples of paintings, 3 paintings which do not fulfill the golden ratio and 3 paintings which use golden ratios, as well as two paintings I have made with the use of golden ratio. The data collected will be taken through a survey. I will distribute a survey (a) Female (1520) (b) Male (1520) about the rank of qua…

Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. I know it's supposed to be an exploration on a reallife thing because I looked at past IAs; even my teacher said that my topic is good but…

I know this is going to sound dumb, but what is the general format for writing the IA? My teacher is not very helpful and looking through the internet so far has not shown me something close to what I need. Should I split my investigation into different categories/sections and if so should I label them as such? What things should I include? How do I organize all of what I want/need to say? How long should each of the parts be? Please, I am so lost and don't know what to do and have been procrastinating on this so much because I don't know what to do. I already have my idea and data, I just need to know how to translate that into an essay.

In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The BlackScholes equation (alth…

Hey guys, My draft for mathIA is due in 1 week, and I have the topic but I haven't written anything. The reason is I don't know what to write about. I know I will be writing on the martingale method, and I have written a java script which simulates this method for 1,000,000 rolls of roulette on the American (double 0) roulette board. I can choose the initial bet and how much money I have at the start. Should I just write my IA on debunking the betting method? Or find the optimum starting bet based on the total balance? Or should I make a new betting method and write the code for that and debunk my OWN betting method? which would be better for personal …

So im starting my math IA but Im not quite sure if the subject is apropriate. I really liked the subject od 3D geometry and so I thought that calculating surface area and volume of something would be neat. So I came up with the idea of doing a videogame character since thaths something that intrests me, so far I have the options of toon Link (I would smplidy his design using blender) or the original Cloud from FF7 but Im not sure if the subject is complex enough or if the idea is not sutable for the paper. Any tips would be greatly apriciated

Hi, so i have decided that i would like to do my IA on game theory, the prisoner's dilemma. The question is if it is a good idea for an sl student to do so and if any of you guys have tips for doing this topic. Maybe you wrote an exploration about game theory and have some materials, links, videos that could be useful? I know i am asking for a lot but right now i dont know how to start working on my IA and i should have had at least done some reading by now so i am freaking out. Thanks in advance.

Hello! Recently, I have come up with calculating the volume and surface area of wine glasses for my Math IA (I am in Maths SL). I am just wondering whether if this idea is suitable for Maths SL and whether if it shows personal engagement. Since this idea would involved relatively more heavy calculus as I am at SL level, would it show personal engagement because I am attempting to learn something more challenging and outside the scope of the syllabus? In my opinion, it is not exactly unique or crazy creative compared to the sample IA's I see, for example graphing cosmetic contact lens patterns. Do you have any tips on how I could expand on the topic? I had in mind trying t…

Hi, I'm on the last week of my IA and just changed topics from something very difficult to something I'm fearing is too easy. Bayes' theorem. I'll be applying it to healthcare by focusing on test errors and probability. But I'm scared I won't be able to go into depth enough. Should I maybe just have a topic of "applying to the real world", because it can also be applied to spam filters and other things. Or does maybe someone know a way to expand the healthcare topic? Any help is appreciated

Hello, I am doing my Math AI SL IA on how much time people spend on their mobile devices. My first survey could not give me the data I needed and now I find myself stuck with a new survey that has no responses as the school is closed and cannot send it to the other students. If you could fill it you would really help me, it is just 1 minute. Thank you very much! https://forms.gle/ryuUyYj5Yz24RRnXA

basically, my teacher is asking us to come up with 3 possible SL math IA topics. so far, i have 1: determining the number of wishes a player would have to spend on average, to achieve a 5star character or weapon, taking into account the mechanics of the game (e.g. increasing rates based on failure) the game i'm using is Genshin Impact, i'm not sure if this is doable though i was also thinking of doing something related to prime numbers, or sudoku, but i'm not entirely sure. i heard that game theory is difficult to do, and not many people score well, so i'm debating whether or not to use the probability one. if anyone can list some suggesti…

Hi guys, can someone please tell me if the topic "modeling the tuition cost for the colleges" is a good math AA SL IA to explore? I am so confused. I feel like it's too simple. My other ideas are "modeling the growth of the usage of computers" or find the correlation between the country's GDP and Literacy rate. Are any of these worth exploring?

Hey guys, my teacher has just announced that we have to submit maths IA topic proposals by the end of next week. I've thought of several All of which turned out either immensely difficult, too simple or simply lacking personal engagement. More recently, I'm thinking of doing my IA on statistics and covid19 owing to the fact that it's something that I am actually interested in and that statistics had always been one of my stronger suits in mathematics. Sadly, all I have in mind is covid19 and statistics, nothing more. Seriously, I am stuck. Hi, I am looking for a topic to do my internal assessment in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. I thought about doing something related to finances. I thought of studying how someone could enrich by doing bank investments. This is still a broad topic (I think) and I am having trouble creating a research question on this topic. Also, I am not quite sure what approach would be interesting to study this topic. I can talk about growth and financial interest, but I don't know if this is enough. Can anyone please help me?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone could offer me any ideas on what other statistical tests or math can be used in my math ia on statistics. I already did linear regression, pearson correlation coefficient and chi squared test. I was also thinking of doing standard deviation but I'm not sure how that would be helpful in my analysis since I'm comparing the relationship of two variables. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Tony

Hello, I want to do my maths IA on astronomy, but I don't really know where to start. My initial idea was to predict the distance between earth and three other stars as well as how much time would I loose on earth if I visited each star and came back, although my teacher said that's too advanced and something I'd do in university not now. So he suggested that I'd do something related to old nautical instruments of navigation (eg: astrolabe); he thought I could understand how these work and how unreliable they were, but I'm not very interested in that. I really want to do something related to space, stars, galaxies, even "time travel" perhaps. Do you have any id…

Hi! I’m looking to find the probability of Lewis Hamilton becoming an 8 time world champion this year. However, I am unsure of how to do this, apart from using chi squared, Pearson coefficient and a best fit line and I wanted to know if anyone could give me some pointers on how to go about calculating this probability.

My aim for my math exploration is to find a US capital city whose climate matches Kyoto, Japan. I am only looking at the temperature aspect of the climate. I manage to narrowed down my data and now I am trying to find the equation to fit my data. I know that I am using sinusoidal modeling to find it, but I want to use the sine regression to get those models. However, I don't know if IB will give me less marks because of that. I have to find 6 models since I am doing the maximum and the minimum avarage temperaturesfor each city. I find this would make my paper extra long, and the equations would not be as accurate to compare and get an accuarate conclusion for…

I want to do my Math IA in correlation, and I'm planning to look into the correlation between drinking age and drunk driving accidents in different countries but I cant find any reliable source or efficient data at all! does anyone know of a website that offer such data? I'm also considering to look into the correlation between drug use and poverty or drug use and crime rate or something in that filed. Is that appropriate? And does anyone know of a database or website that offer such data? Many thanks in advance!

Hi I am currently writing an IA which is due today I am not sure what topic I should choose? I know it's very very late but I really need to do something for my rough draft. I am not really good at understanding math so you have to be a little specific while explaining what math I can use in a particular topic.

My Applications and Interpretations IA is going to be an utter disaster. My biggest concern is whether I'll be able to take the exam if I don't turn in anything at all, because right now I feel like all hope is lost. I'm far too late to salvage it. How badly will it affect me both grades wise and exam wise, and if I absolutely must, what tips do you have for getting something put together quickly?

Hello! I am new to the ib program and this is my first time making an IA, tbh i am still in confusion with how this all works, but I'm figuring I might do a topic about music.. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me suggestions on how my topic could relate to statistical modeling math.. Could the beat in each genre of music have anything to do with it?

Hello everyone, Since Mathematics is my weakness subject in IB, I figured I could ask before doing anything wrong. The deadline for submitting my Math IA is next week. Okay, so I got to see my scored IA's that my teacher scored (so there's still the chance that the moderators might/lower raise the score). But out of 40 available points total on both of them, I only got 24. A bit miffed at the numbers, but as it was the best I could do (Math is my weakest subject) I wasn't surprised. So my question remains, is this a bad score? Should I worry about it? What's the average score? Thanks, I'm really REALLY worried about the numbers, so I thought this might be the best place to ask! Thanks!

Hi there! I'll be quick about it, I'm modelling the phases of the moon as my Maths IA because my teacher forced me to do this topic. I had done a great IA abut the Coastline Paradox but my teacher forgot that I told him about it and he gave the topic to another student so now I have to redo my entire IA. I just don't get how I can get a 16 page IA from this topic, essentially I just have to take pictures of the moon and model how much of it is visible but apart from that? I mean he insists that I can explore in Geogebra but I just don't even know where to start from. And it makes no sense to me because the answer of my essay is easily a sine function so anything outside o…

Hi, I have just entered grade 11 in the IB curriculum. This is the 2nd week of school and the school has assigned a math IA which does not count towards the final IB score however it represents 20% of every math's grade on my report card. The math should not be lower than grade 10 level or too complex that I will not be able to understand it. I prefer to choose something from an automotive area. Any ideas? These are the broad areas we can choose from: Navigation – right angle and nonright angle trigonometry Building a snow terrain park – eg amount of snow required, etc. Statistics (bivariate analysis) – eg correlation between a country’s healthca…

Hello, my IA is due very soon and I couldn't figure out another topic because I dedicated all my research towards one thing and could only find time to tweak it a little. So I want to know if the math level is difficult enough or how can I make it difficult enough for the criterion. My topic right now is finding out when a total solar eclipse can occur on Mars because the orbit of one of it's moons is decreasing and that increases it's apparent size in the sky so it can eventually cover the sun. To tackle my topic i had to find the distance of Mars from the Sun at one of the latest recorded eclipse (august 2013) and i decided to graph distance of Mars from the sun in…

Yeo so basically my rough copy for my math IA topic is due soon and i'm so lost, 3 of my proposals got rejected by my teacher LMAO. Like i wanted to relate tennis and math, but I soon realized that woulden't really work, unless I did probabilities and that wont even work that well. Then I TRIED to look at a correlation between injuries and sports or something like that but NOTHING IS WORKINGGG. if yall got any ideas for high scoring IA's, please comment an idea, i'm really desperate.

Hi all! Its an amazing opportunity to be on this forum amongst so many fellow IB students! For my SL maths IA, I have decided to do a statistical analysis on how HDI affects PISA exam scores with the overarching topic being if students in developed countries will do better academically on average. The course content I plan to connect it to is median, standard deviation, mean, pearsons correlation coefficient, correlation, least squares regression line, boxplots, range and percentiles/quartiles, applying it to the statistics unit that we have done. My plan is to take data from 3 different sets of years and do an analysis on each of them and then compare them with eac…
