# Ratio and Proportion Quiz Set 009

### Question 1

Two numbers A and B are in ratio 14 : 15. If they are both increased by 10%, what will be the new ratio of A : B?

A

\${14/15}\$.

B

\$2{1/14}\$.

C

\$2{10/17}\$.

D

\$3{8/17}\$.

Soln.
Ans: a

New A will scale to \$110/100\$ × 14, and B to \$110/100\$ × 15. New ratio is \${110 × 14}/{110 × 15}\$ = \${14/15}\$.

### Question 2

What is the value of the first part if 308 is divided in the ratio \$7/3\$ : \$5/3\$ : \$8/9\$?

A

147.

B

151.

C

143.

D

155.

Soln.
Ans: a

We have \$7/3\$ : \$5/3\$ : \$8/9\$. Now 9 is the LCM of 3, 3 and 9, so the ratios become \$7/3 × 9\$ : \$5/3 × 9\$ : \$8/9 × 9\$, which are same as 21 : 15 : 8. The value of the first item is \$21/{21 + 15 + 8}\$ × 308 = 147.

### Question 3

A bag contains 25p, 10p and 5p coins in the ratio 6 : 9 : 11. How many 25 paise coins are there if the total amount is Rs. 59?

A

120.

B

122.

C

118.

D

124.

Soln.
Ans: a

Let the total number of coins be 6x, 9x and 11x. Please note that 25p = Rs. 1/4, 10p = Rs. 1/10, 5p = Rs. 1/20, so they add to x × \$(6/4 + 9/10 + 11/20)\$ = 59. LCM of 4, 10 and 20 is 20, multiplying both sides by 20 we have x × \$(6 × 5 + 9 × 2 + 11)\$ = 59 × 20, which is x × \$(30 + 18 + 11)\$ = 59 × 20, solving for x we get x = 20, so 25p coins = 20 × 6 = 120.

### Question 4

Two numbers M and N are in ratio 15 : 7. If they are, respectively, increased by 20% and 30%, what will be the new ratio of M : N?

A

\$1{89/91}\$.

B

\$3{1/90}\$.

C

\${89/93}\$.

D

\$4{27/31}\$.

Soln.
Ans: a

New M will scale to \$120/100\$ × 15, and N to \$130/100\$ × 7. New ratio is \${120 × 15}/{130 × 7}\$ = \${180/91}\$, which is same as: \$1{89/91}\$.

### Question 5

If 10% of a number is equal to 4/13 of another number, then what is the ratio of first number to second number?

A

\$3{1/13}\$.

B

\$4{5/12}\$.

C

\$1{4/5}\$.

D

\$5{4/15}\$.

Soln.
Ans: a

We have \${10A}/100 = {4B}/13\$, which can be re-arranged to \$A/{4 × 100} = B/{10 × 13}\$, so the required ratio is (4 × 100) : (10 × 13), which is 40 : 13. So the answer is \${40/13}\$, which is same as: \$3{1/13}\$.
